Pilot Comments for ETHN
Johannes
Last update 2015-12-04: Good IFR training field (ILS/NDB). PAR unfortunately u/s. Outside radar ops hours, IFR training requires prior coordination with Langen ACC => check NOTAMs; times sometimes change several times per week.
- Rather old and thus very compact IFR approach procedures => saves time and allows more approaches, but they need to be flown precisely.
- Everyone very nice & friendly
- Coffee free of charge.
- Fees inexpensive: e.g. Grumman Tiger AA5 (999kg): landing 5,50€, IFR approach 12€
- MOGAS available
- At the approach end RWY 25, a road crosses the runway; it is closed by a red light during approaches.
- Busy helicopter traffic (civ + mil) is quite a show.

ETHN (Niederstetten) is a joint military and civil airfield offering both IFR and VFR approaches, including ILS and RNP procedures. Operations are described as friendly and relaxed, with both military and civil controllers accommodating. Runway length is 1336 meters with standard controlled airspace procedures; helicopter activity (civil and military) is common. Choice of runway direction may be possible in light wind conditions. Procedures may vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Landing fees are generally low. Example: landing fee about €10–€30.
A restaurant or café is present but not always open; coffee is often available regardless of restaurant hours, sometimes free of charge. Fuel is available but may be limited in quantity; advance inquiry is advised.
Customs can be arranged with prior notice via an online form on the airport website; officers may not always be present, but customs clearance is possible for international arrivals.
Ground transport options include occasional buses and taxis; the town of Niederstetten is about 4 km from the airfield. The overall atmosphere is welcoming, making ETHN suitable for general aviation visits.
