PPR is required, typically arranged via a handling agent such as Goldair or Skyserv; handling is mandatory and must be booked in advance. PPR is only available through the handler, and the process can involve significant paperwork and advance coordination. Example: total fees including landing, handling, PPR, crew bus, and commission about €120. AOPA membership provides discounts on handling and landing fees. Crew transport to the terminal may be included or charged separately.
Avgas is available year-round, usually supplied by bowser; payment by credit card or BP Carnet is accepted. Fueling can sometimes involve delays. No on-field maintenance facility exists, but ground staff are helpful with minor technical issues.
Approaches can be challenging due to terrain and strong winds, especially when landing on runway 09 from the north or east; turbulence is common with winds above 15–20 knots from the north. The GA parking area is exposed to crosswinds and oriented perpendicular to prevailing gusts of 30–40 knots. ATC is generally friendly and procedures are straightforward.
Hotels are available within a short taxi ride; the nearby town of Pythagorio (about 3 km away) offers amenities and a beach with views of airport operations. Taxis to town cost around €10.
Customs checks occur on arrival; expect baggage inspection. Bureaucracy for departure can take up to 40 minutes for paperwork completion.
Samos offers long opening hours year-round and is suitable as a technical stop for GA flights crossing between Cyprus and Western Europe. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
